Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso. It features a single apse. The entrance is surmounted by a serizzo lunette, a variant of granite, enriched with a standing figure bas-relief.
The chapel preserves its ancient charm intact, as if suspended in time. A simple yet magical presence, consolidating the evocative atmosphere that characterizes the Castle of Jerago and its gardens. The history of the Church, an oratory dedicated to Saint James
The small church at the gates of the Castle of Jerago is a structure dating back to the 12th century, dedicated to Saint James, from whom it takes its name. It is located on a small hill, from which the village of Jerago can be seen. Its entrance is framed by a pair of imposing pine trees, symbolizing the intimate connection between the castle and nature. The interior is enriched with traces of frescoes from different periods, reflecting a long and rich history.
The church of the Castle of Jerago, formerly called "Church of Saint James in the Castle," played an important civil and religious role. It was a stop for the many pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela, to undertake the famous pilgrimage route that stretches through France and Spain to the sanctuary where the Apostle James the Greater is believed to rest. The pilgrimage was heavily traveled since the time of the castle’s construction, and the church thus served as a place of rest and prayer for travelers.
