Fresco Room

The Fresco Room

The Fresco Room is characterized by the presence of a large painting that gives it its name: a fresco transferred onto canvas depicting the Holy Family and Baroque architectures, originating from a chapel destroyed in the Lombard plain.

The room also contains a painting depicting Apollo and Daphne.
The myth tells of the quarrel between Apollo, god of the Sun and Poetry, and Eros, god of Love, and of Apollo's intense passion for Daphne, a nymph, daughter of Gaia, Mother Earth, and the river Peneus.
After defeating with his arrows the fearsome Python serpent that infested the plains of Delphi, Apollo boasted of his feat to Eros, mocking him for his appearance, which was not comparable to that of a true hero.
Furious at the affront, Eros prepared his revenge: a golden arrow struck Apollo, who instantly fell in love with the beautiful nymph, herself struck by a lead arrow designed to repel love.
Consumed by passion, Apollo began to chase Daphne through the woods relentlessly: he desired her with uncontrollable longing.
Daphne, frightened, fled, but the god was closing in: the young nymph then invoked the help of her mother Gaia.
Moved with compassion, Mother Earth transformed her daughter into a laurel tree, which from that moment on became a symbol of Apollo's cult and a crown of glory for victors, by the god’s will.

In the painting, present in The Fresco Room of the Castle of Jerago, we see on the right the nymph attempting to flee from Apollo, who on the left is almost ready to reach her. Above, Eros enjoys his revenge, hovering over the unfortunate couple. The drapery of the characters’ garments is animated by the frantic chase, while Apollo, god of the Sun, is surrounded by a golden, luminous aura illuminating a dark background.

The Fresco Room is also called the "Bride and Groom Room" because it is the designated space for Civil Ceremonies. Indeed, in agreement with the Municipality of Jerago con Orago, it is possible to hold an official civil wedding at the Castle.
